Green Beans

Mom and I harvested approximately 150 cups of green beans today from my auntie's garden.  It has been years, maybe even decades, since I've picked beans with Mom.  I had to smile a little when she shouted across the rows a reminder to "pick'em close."

As if I knew any other way to pick them! I believe I've had more green bean picking training than all other types of preparation (academic, life skills, or otherwise) combined!  Though I've come to realize, later in life, that my veggie and berry picking skills may be specific to my matriarchal line.  These truths I know in my bones:

Truth 1: If you don't pick green beans close, you have to pick them EVERY DAY. If you want to do something fun tomorrow, you better pick those beans CLOSE today!

Truth 2: If you don't pick clean, you will spend your afternoon cleaning beans instead of playing, while your mother describes, in detail, the subtleties of how to snap a bean off the bush perfectly, without sacrificing any length of bean, or damaging the brittle vines or delicate blossoms of the bush.

Truth 3: Bean season doesn't end until Mom says it does. At which point, the vines are ripped up with exhausted, exasperated viciousness, and thrown over the fence to the eager cows.

Every woman in my excessively large rural family had a monster of a garden and put up a year's-worth of food during our short Northern Minnesota growing season. I don't know how other kids spent their summers because I was too busy spending my childhood planting, weeding, picking, snapping, washing, cutting, and filling canning jars with green beans. If my sister and I didn't pick the beans closely enough on the first try, we had to pick the row again. Mom definitely checked our work. If she found one missed bean of appropriate picking size, we had to repeat the row.

I'm not complaining. I'm rather proud of the fact that I know how to pick "close" and "clean." It just made me smile that Mom thought she should remind me.

2015 Graduation

This post is so overdue....

Our youngest son, Richard Leif Erickson, graduated from Bemidji High School at the end of May 2015.

Leif passed his Certified Nurses Assistant exam the Monday after graduation.  He also received his certificate for Personal Care Attendant on June 29th.  He plans to pursue a Registered Nurse degree.
We are so PROUD of him!

Here he is shown with the quilt the ladies of our church made for him.

Bonfire & Bears

One of three fires Clancy lit last night.
Six teenagers were on hand to make the most of it.
What a gorgeous night.
Plus the plum blossoms are in full bloom.
And I saw another black bear (this one a true shiny black rather than last week's Hershey brown color) grubbing for turtle eggs along Boston Lake Road yesterday.
(sorry-no time for a photo before he bounded into the watery cedar swamp)
But thanks to our faithful Lleulu, no bears in the yard so far this year.
(I love love LOVE her!)
This has already been a lovely weekend...with one more day to go.
Thanks to all the Veterans and their families out there.

Book Bonding-Fully Funded!

I would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to my friends from Bemidji High School Class of '91.  Many of them donated to this project and it was fully funded yesterday.
So happy!

Do you remember the first moment you fell in love with reading?
One of my earliest memories is of my Richard Scarry's Mother Goose book.  It was hardcover and I still have it.  I lived inside that book's world until I went to kindergarten.

As I progressed through school my teachers introduced me to other authors.
Beverly Cleary
Walter Farley
Roald Dahl

I loved reading.  I loved reading for reading's sake.  I loved all kinds of books:  love stories, murder mysteries, against all odds, historical, science fiction, fantasy...
I just loved reading.  And all those stories have played a part in molding my person.

I'm guessing that many of you reading this blog are also avid book readers.
If you are, take just a moment to imagine your life if your connection to reading had never been established.  However you came to be a person that loved reading....just imagine that never happened....
Where would you be without those books that influenced your life?
Where would you be if you had never latched on to the joy of reading?

Without doubt or question, my life would have been bleak.  It is unfathomable how my spirit would have been sustained through my darkest hours without access to reading.

Now think of all the distractions that a modern-day teenager has.  So many young people enter their high school years without having fallen in love with reading yet.
Do you really want to live in a world governed by young people that never learned how to love reading?
I find it terrifying, myself.
And so deeply, painfully sad.

Here's where I'm going with this:
My dear friend from high school is now a high school teacher herself.  And she is trying to raise money to get high-interest reading materials in her classroom library.  She wants to put high-interest books in the hands of her students so they can fall in love with reading for the first time in their lives!  "High-interest" means the books kids are talking about NOW.  You aren't going to see Steinbeck on this list.  But a kid that doesn't like to read isn't going to pick up Steinbeck anyway.  A kid that loves to read will, quite possibly, eventually visit some of the classics.
So I'm asking you to PLEASE DONATE to my friend's classroom library by clicking on one of these links.  It only takes a minute to donate any amount you choose to give.
Help Ms. Dittrich lead her students toward a lifetime of reading.
If YOU recognize the value of reading in your life, this is a WORTHY cause.

Ice Out

The small bit of ice on Boston this morning was completely gone by late afternoon.
Clancy heard loons before dawn.
Leif went kayaking in the evening.

Latest Projects-Photo Heavy!

It has been nearly 10 months since the last time I posted here!  Sorry about the lapse, folks.  Life has been busy.  Rather than play catch-up, I'm simply going to start from the now.
Here are a few projects I've been working on lately...

I recently started making all of my own lip balm and lotions.  My skin loves it and my complexion is finally improving.  Plus I LOVE the process of concocting new formulas!

I also made 21 little gift/candy boxes for my church's craft sale last week.
Paper crafting is one of my first loves!

Then I decided to needle felt a small rabbit.
But it started to look like a dog's head.
So then I made a dog...
Because I wasn't using a wire armature with this sculpture, I decided to wet felt it before I added finishing touches to make sure it was strong and solid.
The soft toy I pulled out of the dryer looked more like a kitten than a dog.
So I began crafting a kitten.  This was truly an exercise in letting the wool become what it wanted to be.
After much work, I finally had the child's soft toy I was hoping for:
a cute, playful kitten.

In family news I have to relate a special event from November: my siblings and I joined forces with some childhood friends to throw our  fathers (who have been best friends since birth) a joint 70th birthday party.
It was truly a joyful day of visiting and celebration!
My dad, Don Wille (right), and his good friend, Ervin B.
My parents.
My sister, brother, and me.

And my own little family is managing to survive this bitter winter...
The boys are all doing well at their respective schools.
I miss my college boys and I love it when they come home and we can all be together.

To curb my empty nest symptoms, I've been spending extra time with my precious Lleulu.  What a gem she is!  Thank goodness for her unconditional love.  :)

Thinking SPRING!

2013 Graduation

Our sons, Clarence Asa and Donald Isaac, graduated from high school on June 1.  We are so very proud of them!
Here they are with Clancy and me.  Graduation ceremony day was cold and raining, so we didn't get many photos taken.  (It was too crowded inside the building to try to take pics.)

My brother's son, Michael, also graduated from Bemidji.  I just love this picture of the three guys together!

We had the grad open house for the boys this past Saturday at our church.  The weather was perfect and we had a lot of fun.  But I was so busy visiting folks that I only had time to snap one 'posed' picture of the boys with the special cake our friend Linda made just for them...
A separate cake that they didn't have to share with anyone else on their special day was their one request for the grad party.  :)

Congratulations Isaac and Asa!

Megan's New Family

Megan's new family was gracious enough to pose for a quick snapshot on the day she went to live with them.  I hope everyone can see how happy Meg looks.  She barely had time for the camera because she was so busy investigating the barn and pasture...and lovin' on the grandkids.

Thank you so much to the "C" family.  I liked you all the minute we met and I know deep in my heart that you will be wonderful for Meg.
Good Luck and God Bless!

Leif & Winter Formal 2012

On Saturday, my youngest son, Leif, went to Winter Formal.  I think he had a lot of fun.  And of course, Clancy and I enjoyed seeing him dressed up in a tux for the first time ever.  :)

All ready to go...

The 'City of Lights' stage in the high school auditorium where Grand March was held.

Totally at ease in a tux.

Leif and his friend, Erin.

Leif and his cousin, Michael, happened to dine at the same restaraunt that night.  Photo has been shamelessly snitched from my nephew's facebook page.  (Michael, I hope you don't mind.  You and Leif were just too handsome to not post!  Proud of you both!)

Busy Summer

I don't remember ever being this busy.  Soccer, soccer, soccer... Business trips for Clancy.  A new part-time job for me.  The boys working for their grandpa at the sawmill several days a week.  Extra-hot weather that seems to make daily activities feel like twice the effort....

But there is MUCH to be thankful for.  We have had just enough rain to keep the pastures from drying up.  They aren't growing a lot...but it is not brown here yet.  Just the lawn is brown in places.  I am so grateful for the rain!

Lleulu came to us mid-June.  Isn't she just precious in this photo taken with Asa on her first day here?

The "precious" has worn off and it has been replaced with "exasperating."
In spite of her "puppy-ness" and tendency to pull my drying towels off the clothes-line....gggrrrrrrrr....Lleulu is developing into a guardian.  She makes the rounds with Shachah.  She has barked at some suspicious things.  And she seems to have a lot of common sense for a pup.  :)

Shachah is doing well.  And he is actually bonding with Lleu.  He definitely thinks of her as HIS responsibility.  I'm sure he wishes that she wouldn't pester him so much.  But all in all, he's being a wonderful mentor.

And he also blew his coat...so now he feels a lot cooler in this heat.

Evidence that there is a little peace and quiet around here once in a while.  The above photo is a good example of how Lleulu tries very hard to imitate everything Shachah does.
Our sad news is that dear Betty Bird died yesterday.  She was about 19 years old, but we had only had her for the last 6 years...ever since Leif brought her home from school in 4th grade.  We will definitely miss her.  She was like a bright little bit of sunshine in our lives.

John Was Home!

My cousin, John, was home from the Naval Academy this weekend.  So the boys and I combined a soccer tournament in Duluth with some time in Chisholm where family was gathered to hang with John.

We were too busy to take pictures until the very last minute before leaving.  But the smiles give away how much fun we had together.  :)

Relaxed.
LOVE YOU, JOHN!  MISS YOU MUCH!

Prom 2012

A milestone at the Erickson house...
Isaac and Asa attended their Junior Prom
Shameless bragging:  I thought my sons looked so handsome...and their dates were just beautiful.

Isaac and his friend, Abby.

My camera decided to malfunction...boo!...and by the time it actually worked, the kids were tired of posing and they were laughing.  But I finally got these TWO photos!  Abby wore an authentic Indian sari.  So cool!

Asa and his friend, Sabrina.

My camera was behaving earlier in the evening, and the couple graciously posed for about 50 snapshots.  :)  Sabrina was wearing her favorite color: bright green.  Gorgeous!  And Asa had designed the flowers specificly to match her dress.

So proud!
